Woman getting teeth whiteningEverybody wants a beautiful healthy smile and everybody wants white teeth. The whiter the better. In-Office teeth whitening which is available and has become one of the most popular cosmetic dental procedures today. Having your teeth whitened in a dental office is safe, controlled and pain-free.

Teeth whitening in a dental office offers immediate results. Over the years teeth can become discolored by many things. It can be from certain foods and beverages and simply from age.

Certain foods such as: coffee, red wine, sodas, dark-colored vegetables, and fruits. Tobacco use can also discolor teeth. As we grow older teeth tend to change color. They can have a yellow, brown, or even green/gray color. These types of discolored teeth are the best stains to benefit from in-office teeth whitening.

There are some stains that can be resistant to in-office teeth whitening. Teeth that have been in some sort of trauma will be resistant and even look darker around the other teeth that have been whitened.

Tetracycline antibiotics that were taken during tooth formation can discolor the teeth. Too much exposure to fluoride can also cause discoloration.

Before receiving the procedure there has to be some prepping done. Pictures must be taken to make sure there aren’t any cracks or decay in the teeth. Gum disease is also an issue. If there is any gum disease it must be taken care of before the procedure. Also any decay must be taken care of a head of time.

The procedure itself really doesn’t take very long. A hardening resin is applied to the gums to protect them from irritation from the bleaching gel. The bleaching gel which is hydrogen peroxide will be applied to the teeth. This will remain on the teeth for approximately 15-30 minutes. It will then be removed and an additional one or more treatments will be reapplied and remain on the teeth again for 15-30 minutes. Sometimes during the time the bleaching gel is on the teeth, a light will be used to activate the gel. In between treatments the teeth will be accessed to check on how they’re whitening.

After the process is finished the patient will rinse and a shade measurement will be made to see the different after treatment. The teeth can whiten from 2 shades whiter up to 8 shades whiter. Sometimes right after the treatment the shades may look whiter than what they will actually be due to dehydration from the bleach. The true color can be seen in a couple of days.
